Interlock paving is a specialized system where individual concrete or clay pavers are installed on a compacted aggregate base with a sand bedding course. The pavers fit together tightly, and the joints are filled with sand, typically polymeric sand, which hardens to lock them in place. The entire system is held together by durable edge restraints. It is not just the pavers themselves but this entire structure working together that provides the strength and flexibility. This system allows for slight movement without cracking, making it ideal for climates with frost heave.

How long does an interlock patio installation take?
The timeline for an interlock patio installation depends on the size and complexity of the project. For a typical residential patio of about 200-400 square feet, the process usually takes between 4 to 7 working days, weather permitting. This includes a day for excavation and site preparation, one to two days for base compaction and screeding the sand bedding, another day or two for laying the pavers and making cuts, and a final day for joint filling and cleanup. Larger or more intricate projects with features like retaining walls or multiple levels can extend this timeline. We always provide a clear project schedule before we begin any interlock paving work so you know exactly what to expect.

What's the best base for interlocking paving stones in our climate?
For the Maple Ridge climate, with its heavy rainfall and freeze-thaw cycles, a robust base is non-negotiable for durable interlock paving. We recommend a minimum base depth of 6-8 inches for patios and walkways and 10-12 inches for driveways. The base should consist of a high-quality, clear-crush granular aggregate, like 3/4-inch crushed stone. This material allows for excellent drainage and resists frost heaving. The most critical part of the process is base compaction. We compact the aggregate in 2 to 3-inch lifts using a heavy-duty plate compactor to achieve at least 98% of its maximum density. This creates a stable, interlocking foundation that prevents the interlocking paving stones from shifting or settling over time.

Can you fix or repair uneven interlock stones?
Yes, one of the primary advantages of interlock paving is its repairability. If you have uneven interlock stones, the process for repair is straightforward for a professional. We carefully lift the affected pavers, and then we diagnose and correct the root cause of the problem, which is almost always an issue with the base material beneath. This may involve adding and re-compacting the aggregate base or re-leveling the sand bedding layer. Once the foundation is restored, we re-install the original pavers and re-apply polymeric sand to the joints. This targeted interlock paving repair is much more cost-effective than replacing an entire concrete slab that has cracked or settled.

How do I stop weeds from growing in my interlock walkway?
Preventing weed growth in an interlock walkway is all about proper joint filling and maintenance. During installation, we use high-quality polymeric sand. When activated with water, this sand hardens to form a firm yet flexible joint that acts as a powerful barrier against weeds and ants. If an older installation has weed issues, the solution is to thoroughly clean out the existing joints, removing all organic material, and then apply new polymeric sand. For ongoing maintenance of your interlock paving, we recommend regular sweeping and rinsing the surface to prevent seeds from accumulating and germinating in any surface debris. This simple care routine will keep your walkway looking pristine.

Are interlock pavers strong enough for a driveway?
Absolutely. When installed correctly, interlock pavers create one of the most durable interlock paving driveways available. The key is using high-density bricks specifically manufactured to withstand vehicular loads, which are typically at least 60mm (2 3/8 inches) thick. Even more important is the depth and compaction of the sub-base; for a driveway, we install a much deeper aggregate base (10-12 inches) than we would for a patio. This robust foundation distributes the weight of vehicles across a wide area, preventing rutting or shifting. The interlocking nature of the pavers adds to the surface's strength, creating a flexible pavement that can handle the stresses of daily traffic and temperature changes far better than rigid concrete.
